Associate Production Manager

Theatre Row, a program of the non-profit Building for the Arts NY, Inc. (BFA), is an Off-Broadway multi-theater complex in the heart of the Theater District that serves as an affordable home for performing arts organizations, and a lively, accessible venue for diverse audiences.  

Located just two blocks from Times Square, Theatre Row’s five theaters, five rehearsal studios, and nine offices are rented by over 100 theatre and performance arts companies each year, bringing over 125,000 patrons to Theatre Row annually.

BFA is seeking a full-time Associate Production Manager (APM).The APM is a member of the Production Department and supports the Building Operations Department. Successful candidates are enthusiastic about theatre, have an interest in venue operations, and have some technical theatre and facilities experience.

This is a 40 hour/week, salaried, non-exempt position. The APM reports to the Production Manager and aids in the supervision of the Production and Facilities Assistants (PFAs). Evening and weekend hours will be required and some flexibility in scheduling should be expected dependent on production staffing needs.

Responsibilities of the Associate Production Manager include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the PM in the training and supervision of the PFAs
  • Opening and closing the building, including unlocking/locking active theatre spaces
  • Overseeing load-ins, load-outs, rep plot hangs, deck maintenance, and other upkeep projects in the spaces
  • Troubleshooting building and production problems as they arise
  • Assisting the PM in managing Theatre Row’s technical equipment inventory and facilitating equipment repairs when needed
  • Assisting in the maintenance of all properties under the BFA umbrella, including commercial and residential rental properties.
  • Supporting with light janitorial duties, including spot cleaning, snow removal, sidewalk sweeping, and trash management when janitorial services are not available.
  • Assisting the PM in reinforcing production department policies that ensure safe working conditions and organizational standards
  • Acquiring and/or maintaining up to date FDNY fire guard certifications (F-03 and S-95)

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of production and technical theatre experience
  • Have a working knowledge of standard theatrical lighting and sound equipment including ETC products, QLab, and analog Sound Mixers.       
  • Experience with handheld power tools and basic carpentry.  
  • Proficient problem-solving skills and attentiveness to detail
  • Excellent time management skills, including managing competing projects and timelines
  • Commitment to current best Health and Safety practices
  • Sound computer skills including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to remain mobile for long periods (4+ hours) of time
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs,
  • Ability and willingness to work at heights on ladders and operate genie lifts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years experience running a production team or crew
  • Basic knowledge of computer drafting programs (AutoCAD, Vectorworks)
  • Experience working in a multi-venue theatre
  • General knowledge of NYC commercial and non-profit theatres & producers

Compensation: Salary is $50,000 commensurate with experience. Associate Box Office Coordinator

BFA is seeking a part-time Associate Box Office Coordinator (ABC). The ABCs are responsible for handling window and phone sales as well as managing ticket printing and will call. Successful candidates are enthusiastic about patron services and ticketing, have a strong attention to detail, and are familiar with ticketing best practices.

This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position. ABCs report to the Box Office Coordinator. ABCs are typically scheduled for 16 to 28 hours per week, including evenings and weekends. This person must be available from 4:00 – 9:00 pm Tuesday-Friday and 12:00 – 8:00 pm on Saturdays.

The Box Office is open to the public daily from 2:00pm-6:00pm for in person and phone sales; and from 2 hours before the first curtain until 30 minutes past the last curtain on days with performances.  There are evening performances 6-7 days a week and up to 5 matinee days weekly.

Some holidays will be required.

All employees of BFA will be required to provide proof of vaccination (or provide a medical or religious exemption) to enter the building. 

Responsibilities of the Box Office Associate include but are not limited to:

  • Selling and issuing tickets using the Spektrix system
  • Running will call for multiple shows nightly
  • Answering patron questions about the building, facilities, and current & upcoming productions
  • Maintaining filing system for the Theatre Row Box Office
  • Answering incoming phone calls for ticket purchases or customer service requests and processing accordingly.
  • Generating pre-set reports on Spektrix system
  • Providing customer service in a friendly yet expedient manner

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience in ticketing, front of house, or a similar customer service role in either entertainment or hospitality
  • 1 year of professional or educational experience working in theatre
  • Proven record of punctuality and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a friendly demeanor
  • Physical requirements include the ability to sit for multiple hours at a time, hear patrons over the phone, and lift up to 20lbs repeatedly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience in a theatre box office
  • Familiarity with Spektrix
  • Familiarity working with third party ticket sellers such as Goldstar, TKTS, TDF, etc.
  • Experience working at multi-venue theatres

Pay: This position is paid $21 per hour and does not qualify for benefits.

BFA is seeking a part-time Production Facilities Assistant (PFA). PFAs support the Production and Building Operations Departments. Successful candidates are enthusiastic about theatre, have an interest in venue operations, and have some technical theatre or facilities experience.

This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position. PFAs report to the Production Manager. PFAs are typically scheduled for 7 to 21 hours per week with opportunities to cover additional shifts; a shift is typically 7 hours. Theatre Row operates from 9:30am to 11:00pm, seven days a week. Evening and weekend availability are a must.

Some holidays will be required.

All employees of BFA will be required to provide proof of vaccination (or provide a medical or religious exemption) to enter the building. 

Responsibilities of a Production Facilities Assistant include, but are not limited to:

  • Opening and closing the building, including unlocking and locking active theatre spaces.
  • Assisting with rentals of Theatre Row’s lighting, sound, and other equipment.
  • Technical support for current productions including load-in and strike.
  • Troubleshooting building and production problems as they arise during shift.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of all properties under the BFA umbrella, including commercial and residential rental properties.
  • Supporting with light janitorial duties, including as-needed spot cleaning, snow removal, sidewalk sweeping, and trash management when janitorial services are not available.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to carry up to 50lbs, sometimes while navigating multiple flights of stairs quickly.
  • Have a working knowledge of standard theatrical lighting and sound equipment including ETC products, QLab, and analog Sound Mixers.       
  • Experience with handheld power tools and basic carpentry.
  • Some experience working as a lighting, sound, or scenic technician in non profit, commercial, or educational theatre.
  • Ability to prioritize, troubleshoot, and remain calm during emergencies or stressful situations.
  • Familiarity with both commercial and non-profit theatre best practices.
  • Team Player.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 – 2 years of experience working at multi-space venues.

Pay: This position is paid $20 per hour and does not qualify for benefits.
