An Exquisite Corpse of Ubu Roi

An Exquisite Corpse of Ubu Roi is a collaborative game in the form of a play.  Each participating writer was given a short scene from Alfred Jarry’s 1896 proto-Surrealist masterpiece Ubu Roi to revise for our current political era. There were a few rules - the first line in each scene had to remain unchanged, no specific public figures were named, and Ubu’s famous "green candle" had to remain intact - otherwise, the writers were given free range.  None of the authors involved have read or seen anyone else’s work on the play.

The end result - big, sloppy, extremely crude and nonsensical - is not meant to be a coherent theatrical play.  It is meant to be a group act of political resistance.

We are thrilled that our project is part of Fall of Freedom’s Mayday action. We stand together with the other Fall of Freedom artists in creative resistance because our ability to speak, question, create, love, and live without fear should not be taken for granted.
