Fish in a Tree

Based on the book Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
Published by Nancy Paulsen Books, an imprint of Penguin Group LLC

A new play with music that celebrates and explores neurodiversity, friendship, the harm bullying causes, the life changing potential of a generous teacher, and the power of imagination.

Ally is a smart girl with a big imagination but she often causes distractions that get her in trouble in class. She doubts her intelligence due to her dyslexia until a teacher helps her unlock her inner potential. Soon she discovers that great minds don’t always think alike!

Adapted by Barbara Zinn Krieger from the best-selling novel by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, this new play with music for young audiences, directed by Sammy Lopez and Melissa Jessel, uses live video technology, dance, and music to explore Ally’s journey with dyslexia.

  • Fish in a Tree is a 60-minute play with music best for ages 6-9.
  • The show explores one person’s journey with dyslexia.
  • Music, live video, and projections will help make Ally’s mind movies come to life on stage.
  •  Ally is bullied by one of her classmates, who refers to her as ‘dumb.’
  • Tickets are required for all guests.
  • The performances on Sunday, April 2nd at 2pm and Saturday, April 8th at 11am are sensory friendly performances. Sensory friendly performances are designed to create a welcoming environment for all families with children on the autism spectrum and related conditions. Some changes to the performance include the house lights staying on at a low level, lowering the sound levels, and acknowledging that audience members might verbalize throughout the performance.
